Most people approach their weight loss journey with good intentions, but most people don’t have a clue on how to lose weight effectively. There is no magic pill. And the weight will not come off in one or two weeks, regardless of what the ad might say.

Weight loss is a very basic math equation. Burn more calories than you consume and the that will make a deficit and thus – weight loss. It’s not rocket science at all. Of course, most people don’t want to count calories and most people don’t even realize how many calories they are taking in each day. Most people don’t know the proper portion sizes to their food and condiments. For instance – the average person would guess that they use two tablespoons of salad dressing, which is usually the proper serving size, when in fact, they use four times that amount. That adds up to a heck of a lot of calories over time. You may think you’re eating a healthy salad, and then those calories take up a lot of a daily allowance for intake of calories.
The other aspect of weight loss is exercise. Yes, that dreaded word, exercise. For someone who is extremely overweight exercise can be difficult. You wouldn’t want to start off your weight loss journey by trying to run 5 miles on the first day, you’ll burn out fast and not want to do it at all. How about a walk around the block, twice a day. Then make it two blocks, then three blocks and so on.
Tip: Keep a daily log or journal stating the food you eat and how many calories you consume each day. When you have to account for everything that you eat, you are more likely to consume less food and to make healthier dietary choices.
Why not add in something fun, like a zumba class. That is taking an “exercise” class and turning it into dance, and boy does that burn a lot of calories! And when you exercise and burn calories, your endorphins kick in too. Those endorphins will cause a “happy” feeling to come from within. A lot of overweight people are truly depressed – and endorphins help that depression. If the depression is part of what is causing the overeating to begin with, the exercise portion of your weight loss program will only enhance your ability to lose the weight.
The final part of having success in losing weight is really finding a program that you can do long-term…meaning, for life. It’s a lifestyle change, not a temporary diet. If you only go on a diet temporarily, you will certainly gain the weight back, and even add some extra pounds onto that original weight. And thus, more depression. There are many reputable programs out there that have very good success rates. The key is finding one that you like, and sticking with it. Don’t just give up and quit when it gets tough.
Always remember, whatever your weight loss journey may be, it’s YOUR journey. Don’t allow outside naysayers to tell you it’s not going to work, you’ll never lose the weight, and don’t let your internal brain tell you that either. Stay positive, stay on the path, and lose that weight!
