7.0 STRATEGIC AIM:SMARTER
Expand opportunities for Scots to succeed from nurture through to life long learning ensuring higher and more widely shared achievements.
In a Scotland which is smarter, all its citizens will be valued in their diversity and be afforded opportunities to realise their full potential and to make their contribution to the country’s success. The Scottish Government has recognised the importance of language skills in promoting a smarter Scotland. Access to life long learning at every educational level is recognised as a direct means to a ‘smarter’ Scotland and deaf people of all ages require the same opportunities as everyone else in the country to flourish.
A separate independent study was commissioned by the BSL&LAWG from the Scottish Sensory Centre and The National Deaf Children’s Society, which looked at access issues in the pre-school, school age, and the further and higher education sectors. The full report Scoping Study: Linguistic Access To Education For Deaf Pupils And Students In Scotland is available on the Scottish Government website at: www.scotland.gov.uk/Publications/2009/02/11155449/0
This very detailed Scoping Study contains the views of the expert researchers and does not reflect the views of government but it raises many issues which the BSL&LAWG hope to use as a basis for discussion with colleagues.
A BSL translation of the Executive Summary can be found on the BSL:UPTAKE website.
